General Questions

Who can become a member of SCHOLA-21?

Membership is open to teachers, students, and other persons looking for a virtual environment to support their learning activities. Please refer to the terms of use for more information.

Which services are available to members?

All members are provided with a personalised work space (“My SCHOLA-21”). In addition, one or more virtual project rooms may be registered for joint learning activities. Members may also use the community area for networking and exchanging project-related ideas.

What do I need in order to register?

Registering as a member requires a valid email address to which login information will be sent. Please also read the terms of use. If students do not have an email address of their own, we recommend creating a collective email account for the entire class and using this address for registration.

What can I do if I have forgotten my password?

In order to prevent forgetting your password, we recommend printing your login ID with your user information in the “Profile” section under “My SCHOLA-21.” If you do forget your password, however, please contact support@schola-21.de with your username and the subject line “Forgot password” or use the provided contact form. Your password will be sent to the email address you used when registering for SCHOLA-21.
nach oben

How do I change my password?

Your password is hidden from other members and may not be seen by persons with administrative rights either. If you need a new password, you may change it yourself in the member’s area under “Profile / Login information.” Your user name will always remain the same.

How do I become a member of the community?

In order to receive authorisation to use the services within the SCHOLA-21 community space, you first need to accept the general terms of use for the community, which are available in the community area or under “Profile / Activate community access.” After joining the community, an email with a link will be sent to the email address you provided when registering for SCHOLA-21. Clicking on the link will automatically activate your access to the community.
nach oben

Why may I not join the community automatically?

All users are required to accept the general terms of use for the community. Underage users require additional permission from their legal guardians. If a collective class email address was used for registering for SCHOLA-21, the teacher may use this email address to control students’ access to the community.

How long does my membership last?

Membership does not end automatically. Even if you are not active in any virtual project over a prolonged period of time, you may still use the member’s area of SCHOLA-21.

How can I cancel my membership?

Send an email with your user information and the subject line “Cancel membership” to support@schola-21.de or use the provided contact form.

Creating a project room

How do I create a virtual project room?

Each member may independently create project rooms in SCHOLA-21. Go to the “Projects” section in your personalised work space “My SCHOLA-21” to do so. Immediately after entering the project title (a temporary working title), you will receive a project room number and a password. You may use the virtual project room right away. A link will be displayed in the menu bar.

How do I invite members to my virtual project room?

New members may enter a newly created project room for the first time by selecting “Join a new project” in the “Projects” section under “My SCHOLA-21” and entering the project room number and the project room password they have received from the person who has registered the project. After the first login, the project will be listed in the menu bar in “My SCHOLA-21.” For subsequent logins, it is sufficient to click the project title. Another login procedure is not necessary.
nach oben

May students or external partners create a virtual project room as well?

Yes. SCHOLA-21 is freely available to teachers, students, and members of external institutions for the purpose of learning and working together. Who exactly is in charge of a project and creates a project room is irrelevant.

How do I keep unauthorised persons from accessing the project room?

Unauthorised access may best be prevented by handling your login information carefully. Furthermore, persons with administrative rights have the option of closing and opening the project room for additional members. This function is located in the project room under “Preferences,” “Open/close project room.”
nach oben

How many virtual project rooms am I allowed to create?

Each member may register as many project rooms as are required for completing a learning project. In the case of large learning groups or long-term projects, it may make sense to use several project rooms simultaneously.

How many members may learn together in a project room at the same time?

The number of members per project room is not limited. The person who has registered the project may open or close the room for additional members in the “Preferences” section. In the case of large learning groups, it may make sense for members to split up into several separate project rooms.
nach oben

How do I prepare a room for project work?

Under “Preferences” in the project room, there are a number of pre-settings you may choose from. You may determine members’ rights, for example, or compose a welcome message for the project room start page. For detailed information concerning these settings, please go directly to the respective pages and click on Lars, SCHOLA-21’s context-sensitive help tool.

May several persons administer a project room together?

Yes. In the “Preferences” section, the person who has registered the project may determine the status of its other members. This means that administrative rights may be conferred to other teachers and students. The administrative rights of the person who has registered the project room are permanent.

Working in the project room

For which grade or age levels is SCHOLA-21 suitable?

There are no upward or downward age limits for SCHOLA-21. According to our experience, projects may already be carried out in elementary school with competent pedagogical support.

How many computers are required for working with SCHOLA-21?

If you don’t have one computer per person, we recommend you either work on one computer with two or three persons simultaneously or use SCHOLA-21 in small groups at different times.

Can several persons on one computer be logged into SCHOLA-21 simultaneously?

For each existing browser, one login procedure is possible. In other words, if there are two browsers installed on a computer, two persons can work simultaneously in SCHOLA-21 on that machine. In this case, the SCHOLA-21 start page will open in both browsers (once in Mozilla Firefox and once in Internet Explorer, for example), allowing separate logins in each browser window. Alternatively, some browsers provide the option of opening several browser windows with the SCHOLA-21 login page.

Are persons from external institutions allowed to enter the project room?

They are most welcome! External partners may get actively involved in project work by becoming a member of a SCHOLA-21 project room, completing their own profile, and participating in project communication. Holding an expert discussion in a protected SCHOLA-21 chat room may be another possible method of cooperation.
nach oben

How can members of a project room communicate with each other?

The project room provides a number of possibilities for open communication such as the corkboard, the chat, and the “meetings” function. Members can communicate privately with one another by using the “messages” function. In order to use this function, they first need to put together a list of contacts in their address books by searching for the respective members in the project room, viewing their membership cards, and selecting the “Add to address book” button.

Is it possible to also send emails to external email providers from inside the project room?

Yes, this is possible via a secure connection. In the “Email” section under “Communication,” you may send emails to external accounts. The recipients will answer the email via a link. Reply mails will be filed under “Email.” Using this procedure, the project group does not have to reveal their own email address and is protected from unsolicited emails.
nach oben

Can SCHOLA-21 projects communicate with each other?

Exchange between projects is possible in the community space, where learning groups can discuss in specialised forums or contact each other using the search function.

Which help functions are available within the SCHOLA-21 virtual learning environment?

Working with SCHOLA-21, you can resort to a context-sensitive help tool, Lara and Lars. Lara answers questions concerning SCHOLA-21’s technical functionality while Lars provides pedagogical tips for using the SCHOLA-21 modules. When required, Lara and Lars can be activated by a click at any place within the interactive classroom.

How can project information and results be saved and protected?

After completing a project, you can save the results in their final version by deactivating all members except for the person who has registered the project. The final version can then only be viewed “externally” via the project homepage. Another way of saving data is by saving individual project components as PDF documents in the “portfolio” section.

How can I make sure that no objectionable pictures or other files are uploaded to the project room or the project homepage?

All files uploaded to the project room and the project homepage are identified by name and may thus be traced back to their authors. If you wish to save the project homepage in its final version after the project has been completed, we recommend deactivating all members via the preferences section before publishing the project homepage.
nach oben

Why is our project homepage not visible yet?

The homepage is published in the preferences section. As long as the “Publish” command has not been selected, the project homepage cannot be accessed from the outside. The homepage’s content and design can be adapted anytime after publication. This enables project groups to make parts of their project accessible even when it is still in its initial stages and to keep their work processes transparent.

What happens to the project room and the project homepage after our project has been completed?

Both the project room and the project homepage remain in place unless the person who has registered the project wants the room to be deleted. After completing a project, its members may be deactivated to save the project in its final version.

How can I terminate my membership in a project room?

Members who do not want to participate in a project any longer may leave the project in the “Projects” section under “My SCHOLA-21.” Their contributions to the project remain in place.

Technical Questions

What are the minimum requirements for working with SCHOLA-21?

SCHOLA-21 runs on Windows (Windows 95 or higher,) Mac, and Linux. All recent browsers are supported. The chat functions require Macromedia Flash Player (version 5 or higher.) You do not need to install additional software components. Screen resolution should be set at 1024 x 768 pixels, with high colour depth.

Which browser settings are required?

We recommend activating JavaScript and deactivating any pop-up blockers in your browser. We do not use cookies.

Which screen resolution is best?

Ideally, screen resolution should be set at 1024 x 768 pixels. Under Windows, screen resolution can be adjusted in the Control Panel (Display/Settings.)
nach oben

What can I do if elements are cut off at the right edge of the screen or if the project room is displayed too small?

In these cases, your screen resolution is set either too low or too high. The higher the resolution, the smaller the work window will be displayed. The lower the resolution, the larger the work window will be displayed. Under Windows, screen resolution can be changed in the Control Panel under “Display”/“Settings.”

Which file formats can I use for uploading pictures to SCHOLA-21?

All common picture file formats are supported: JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), Bitmap (.bmp), PNG (.png), and TIF (.tif). TIF files are usually quite large and therefore take more time to upload or download.
nach oben

I have trouble uploading files. What can be the reason?

SCHOLA-21 generally asks for confirmation before uploading files, so be sure to click the “Save” button. The uploading process itself may take a while, depending on file size and the speed of your internet connection. So it is important to wait until you see the message that the picture or the file has been saved successfully. In certain cases, you may experience problems uploading pictures if your file is above or below the indicated file size for certain areas such as the profile or the project picture. Please also pay attention to the correct file extension and double-check whether it is the same as the actual file format. Certain file types, especially from the video and audio sector, are not supported by SCHOLA-21.

Does my computer have to be online all the time when working with SCHOLA-21?

Yes. You have to be online to enter and process data within SCHOLA-21.
